Various health issues are recognized with their own health awareness month or health awareness week every month. Because there are so many diseases or illnesses, but only 12 months in a year, multiple diseases are recognized in any given month. Since this website focuses on the lives of single mothers, I am recognizing Health Minute: Ovarian Cancer Month for September, which is a disease that affects women.
According to the American Cancer Society, Ovarian Cancer begins in the ovaries. It is one of the cancers that women are least likely to get but when they do, it causes more deaths than other cancers of the reproductive system.
September is Ovarian Cancer Month
Recognizing various health issues is very important in helping women to take control of their health. To be effective and to be all that we can for our children, we must take care of ourselves. In addition, I have worked in Public Health for the last 13 years in the areas of Breast/Cervical Cancer, Emergency Preparedness, and HIV/AIDS Prevention, so educating others about health is especially important to me.
Next month, October, is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We will talk about that here as well. My mother is a two-time Breast Cancer survivor and I have other family members who are survivors as well. I hope to bring you their stories to this site soon.
For this post, I will link to credible resources from which you can read about Ovarian Cancer. I will not attempt to recreate the wheel when there is already detailed information out there for us. However, I want you to know that the main takeaway is this – Education is Key. As a fellow Blogger, Khrista, pointed out to me, early detection of ovarian cancer is difficult.
As this information is not meant to replace the advice of your doctor, please keep regular medical appointments and consult with your doctor on the various cancer screenings you need. She can help you understand the risks and recommend any specialists for you. Health Minute: Ovarian Cancer Month - Take Control of Your Health! #ovariancancer #womenshealth… Click To Tweet
